Saumur Blanc, Chateau de Villeneuve 2021
This beautiful estate, which has been producing wine since 1577, has 25 hectares of vineyards overlooking the Loire river, with just 5 hectares of Chenin Blanc grown on white chalky tuffeau soils. It's now run by owner Jean-Pierre Chevallier, who also previously taught oenology at Bordeaux University. This is a very fine example of a still underrated grape variety, with fresh apple, melon and honeysuckle aromas combined with notes of peach, apricot and ginger, with a more zesty, mineral finish but also some richness from the 30% portion fermented in barrel.
