Grignolino, Agostino Pavia & Figli 2021
This small estate of just 10ha, now run by Giuseppe and Mauro Pavia, is best known for its superb Barbera d'Asti wines but also makes this wonderful example of the little known Grignolino variety, a speciality of the Monferrato hills of Piemonte and Asti in particular. The wine is difficult to make on account of the grapes' many pips (grignole) which give the variety its name but is worth the effort: light in colour and full of bright fresh berry fruit, notes of wild herbs and vibrant acidity with a little tannin and surprising depth, like a northern Italian Beaujolais Cru.
