Wines of Hungary Tutored Tasting - Wednesday 12th November 2025

  • £25.00

Will be in stock after

Hungary has a history of winemaking dating back at least to the Roman Empire when it was part of the province of Pannonia. By the 17th Century the sweet Tokaji Aszu wines (many produced on aristocratic estates) were highly sought after, the 'Sun King' Louis XIV being a notable fan. Production and exports dwindled however following the Phylloxera epidemic several centuries later and during Soviet Union occupation after the Second World War. Independence in 1989 and economic recovery after accession to the EU saw the start of  a gradual revival, led by a new generation of talented winemakers.

Besides Tokaji however the majority of its wine styles, grape varieties and regions are still very little known in this country. So it's a pleasure to welcome back Robert Ewing of specialist importer Delibo (who also represent Bulgaria's Chateau Burgozone, whose wines some of you will recall from our tasting back in 2023) to explore more of what Hungary has to offer, from the rare Kéknyelű variety of Badascony and the ancient dark-skinned Kadarka from Szekszárd, to wonderful examples of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. A selection of light food is included in the ticket price and all the wines will be available to order on the night.

7.00-8.30pm

(feel free to arrive early for a drink in the bar so that we can start promptly at 7.00pm)
