Vinha Paz, Colheita 2015
This small estate, with 20ha of hillside vineyards, is owned by Antonio Canto Moniz (originally a surgeon but from five generations of winemakers in the Dao region) with his youngest son Henrique now in charge of the winemaking. The grapes for the red wines are trodden by foot in granite lagars (built by Antonio's grandfather) after the harvest before being transferred to stone vats and then a mixture of French and American oak barriques (for 8 months for the Colheita). This is elegant and characterful, with the charm and refinement of a Northern Rhone Syrah or red Burgundy, a real star of the region.
