Ribera del Duero 'Pruno', Finca Villacreces 2017
An excellent example of the region from the 155 hectare Villacreces estate in Quintanilla de Onesimo. The vineyards are adjacent to Vega Sicilia, arguably one of Spain's greatest producers, and are now farmed organically. The younger vines are handpicked to make the 'Pruno' wine, the two varieties then being fermented separately before being aged separately for 12 months in three year old French oak barrels before the final blending. There's lots of deep, dark cherry and berry fruit here, with earthy, smoky licorice and balsamic notes, some elegant minerality along with fine-grained tannins.
