'Corralillo' Carmenere, Matetic Vineyards 2015
The Matetic family (whose Croatian roots explain their untypically Chilean name) had been sheep and cattle farmers in Patagonia since arriving in 1892 before establishing a winery in the relatively new coastal region of San Antonio in 1999. The grapes for their Carmenere however come from warmer, inland hillside vineyards in Apalta, a sub-zone of Colchagua Valley. This has typical Carmenere character, with deep, soft black fruit, dark chocolate and sweet/smoky spice and some subtle vanilla from 18 months' ageing in French oak. Powerful but refined, this is one of the best made examples of Chilean Carmenere you'll find at this price.
