Maximin Grunhaus 'Monopol' Riesling 2016
This historic estate, with a wine-making history dating back to Roman times, takes its name from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Maximin which owned the land for centuries. More recently it's been owned by the von Schubert family since the late 1800s, currently run by Carl, the fifth generation. The Monopol is a blend from the prestigious south-facing Herrenberg and Abtsberg vineyards, both owned entirely by the family, hence the name. This is fermented 50/50 in stainless steel and large oak casks, and made in a more off-dry style with wonderful citrus freshness and mineral poise and a very subtle ripe sweetness, a surprisingly versatile wine.
