Dom Rafael Tinto, Herdade do Mouchao 2018

  • £16.50

This is the second-wine of venerable estate Mouchao, renowned for their 100% Alicante Bouschet wines, from the Alentejo region between Lisbon and the Algarve. The winery was first built in 1901 by John Reynolds (grandson of an English ex-pat) and the vineyards developed over many years, including the first Alicante vines in Portugal. Only part of the estate was returned after the 1974 revolution but it is still family-owned and the grapes still hand-picked and foot-trodden in open-top fermenters or lagares. This is aged in oak, softer and more approachable when young than the top Mouchao wines but still with typically rich, dark, concentrated fruit and soft, earthy spice.
