Valencay, Sebastien Vaillant 2023

  • £15.50

A great example of this unusual appellation of just 100 or so hectares, which was only granted AC status in 2004. Unlike most of the Loire's better known regions, several different varieties (white and red) are permitted here, with Sebastien Vaillant (who first honed his skills in nearby Quincy) using a sizeable proportion of Chardonnay to flesh out his Sauvignon Blanc. The domaine has 24 hectares mostly on the same clay and flint soils which extend eastwards to Pouilly-Fume and Sancerre, although the Chardonnay is grown on sandier lime soils. This is a very approachable combination of grassy, zesty aromas, ripe citrus fruit and a softer creamier quality finishing with a subtle mineral freshness. A great partner to the region's eponymous goat's cheese.
