Bourgogne Passetoutgrain 'l'Exception', Domaine Michel Lafarge 2017

Domaine Lafarge, based in Volnay, pre-dates the French Revolution and they are still producing consistently excellent wines, invariably understated and classical. They were also one of the first Burgundy estates to bottle their own wines and have been certified biodynamic since 2000. This is, not surprisingly, one of the best examples of the unusual Passetoutgrain style, a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay. At Lafarge the two varieties are grown together in the same vineyard, planted in 1926, and the wine is aromatic and full of bright plum, cherry and tart cranberry fruit notes with a touch of savoury earthiness and great freshness.
