Ch Fontesteau, Haut-Medoc Cru Bourgeois 2016 - Case of 6 (usual price £150)
Located in Saint-Sauveur in the heart of the Medoc and with the historic 13th Century château at its centre, the Fontesteau estate covers 35ha of gravel and calcareous soils. Its traditional appearance however belies a modern, sustainable approach to viticulture and it's now certified as such. The wine-making likewise is unusually 'hands-off' for this part of the world, the exceptionally healthy 2016 crop requiring the addition of no sulphur during vinification.
This is classic Left Bank claret in style with tobacco/cedar notes alongside fresh and abundantly ripe red fruit (cassis, strawberry and cherry) and dense, fine tannins. Elevage of the majority of the wine is 12 months in oak barrels, a quarter of which are new. Really terrific value for this much feted vintage and drinking very well now, this will only continue to improve over the next 5-10 years.
