'Cuatro Pasos' Bierzo 2018

  • £11.00

The quietly up and coming appellation of Bierzo sits in Spain's north-western corner (further inland from cooler Rias Baixas, home to Spain's best known whites like Albarino) and  the red Mencia grape predominates. This 100% Mencia (from low-yielding vines over 80 years old on slate soils) is made by Katia Alvarez and Luciano Amoedo of the excellent Martin Codax co-operative and is a great introduction to the Bierzo style,  with lots of concentrated red fruit and a touch of vanilla from a few months' ageing in oak barrels. The paw-prints, incidentally, refer to the Cantabrian brown bears who roam the nearby mountains; whether they picnic in the vineyards I don't know.
